False Cognates - Cognados Falsos

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognate

Cognates are words that are similar or basically the same between two languages. Spanish and English share quite a few words. Doctor-Doctor, Radio-Radio…

Be careful however… There are false cognates… Words that seem alike but have completely different meetings.

I have a year in country and wanted to reflect on the first night that I spent with a Dominican host family.

Imagine-Imaginate:

I arrive and I say, “Hola Sra. Esperanza, mi nombre es Daniel y yo estoy exitado estar aqui consigo.”

Mrs. Esperanza is 65 and while you are thinking that exitado means excited it has an entirely different meaning!.

What I actually said was, “Hi Mrs. Esperanza, my name is Daniel and I am sexually aroused to be here with you.”

Note: The word for excited is emocionado…

Similar to FML … is QVMV (que vaina mi vida)…
